RECENT FINDS FROM YOUR COLLECTION

Postby Bret van Sant on 19 Dec 2002 00:50

MEMBER "BRIG" HAD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A GOOD IDEA. (WELL I HOPE) START A LISTING OF NEW AND RECENT FINDS FOR OUR COLLECTIONS. MAYBE THIS WILL WORK OUT AND MAYBE NOT. I GUESS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS AS TO IF A PIECE IS AUTHENTIC OR NOT THAT CAN BE ASK IN ANOTHER SECTION. OR IF SOMEONE SEES SOMETHING THAT DOESNT LOOK RIGHT THE POST COULD BE MOVED TO SAY THE AWARDS SECTION AND SO ON........ AND SINCE ITS HERE, I THINK THAT IT COULD BE ANYTHING THATS RELATED. SO WHAT THE HEY MAYBE IT WILL TURN INTO SOMETHING GOOD. IF IT FLOPS, WELL WE TRIED.

OK I'LL GO FIRST.... KIND OF A CRAPPY IMAGE BUT... THE THE HELMET ON THE TABLE WAS A WALK IN BUY. THATS VERY RARE WHERE I LIVE! SINGLE DECAL LUFT. WITH THE ROLLED EDGED. NICE LINER NOT ALL MONKED UP CHIN STRAP IS NICE. ABOUT A 80% DECAL AND ABOUT 100% FINISH BUT NOT QUITE. JUST A SWEET PIECE AND THEY WAY I LIKE MY STUFF. AND THE GUY TOOK MY FIRST OFFER OF 250$ I'M NOT A HELMET GUY BY ANY MEANS AND USUALLY THE TWO UNIFORM GUYS WOULD HAVE HAD FIRST CRACK AT IT. BUT THEY WERE NO-SHOWS  SO IT PAYS TO SET UP WHEN OTHERS WAIT FOR THE BIG ARENA SHOWS.
HERE IS THE LINK THE IMAGES ARE JUST WAY TOO BIG

Beautiful dagger. Hey, what is that cloth in the case I keep seeing? I really love the affect and would like to know what it is.

As for me, well, my most recent find was my Early Model SA/SS cap eagle. It was in the back of a photo album from an estate sale. Bunch of currency and photos from where the GI had been, with some German pieces in it. It's nice

Cloth

Postby Rich Yankowski on 19 Dec 2002 02:28

Thanks Brig! All the cloth backgrounds in my cases are satin, the one you mention is actually,I think, burgandy color.I also use a purplish, dark green, and red.My poor camera skills turn the colors darker sometimes, but they still look good to me! :DBTW;That's a 1914 vaulted EK1. :)

Ben Franklin Store

Postby Rich Yankowski on 19 Dec 2002 02:46

A local arts and crafts store called Ben Franklin, real small store. You should be able to get the same,or very similiar, cloth at any arts and crafts type store. The cases come from a company called The Bluegrass Case Company(they are a little slow on shipping,I think they make them when ordered, but worth the wait! :) ),and these are 12"x18"x3" oak. There are several other good sites for cases,I haven't tried them all,but here's a link for the company I mentioned http://www.bluegrasscase.com

This one has been around for over 60 years,I always thought it was a 'mom+pop' operation. :) They also have a nice selection of picture frames, for patches,armbands,pics.,etc.

I'm not an active collector, but last year after my wife's "Uncle Al"died, Aunt Helen was going to throw some of his junk away.Fortunately, one of the relatives thought that "Kim" might like the rural Polizei shako, the 4 visor eagles, the 6 sleeve eagles, and a (beat-up) K-98 bayonette. I sold the shako and a few of the patches. My wife got the $$ since it was her uncle, but at least the shako didn't end up with the garbageman,or worse yet,at the dump. Can you imagine how much stuff has been lost in similar scenarios? Keep your eyes open, folks.
Cheers ,Kim

I only use acid free frames and paper available at glass stores to protect the fabrics/paper

Don't know about mine, thanks for the advice! :D BTW;found this Egyptian Remington Rolling Block barrel and reciever in a garbage can! 8) The 1917 trench knife and U.S.M.C. Briddell Corpsman knife(the alum. handled machete looking thing) were found in old barns, just before they were torn down! :D That ballot sounds great, can you post pics.?

no problem. it takes time for the acid to do much, but that's not the point. Even if it's a crappy two-dollar piece of paper, I want to protect it. Nostalgia, I guess. I have a few nice pieces I intend to leave to a museum when I die (namely, my early 1920s political ballot with the NSDAP checked. Original, practically mint.). Yeah, I'd switch to acid-free, though. I gotta pick a few more up myself
