My friend's grandfather was in the Waffen-SS as an officer with the Einsatzgruppen, and they have most of his stuff(Cap, tunic, pants, and whatever else) and I might be able to obtain it for a good price.

that's neat, but I think it should probably stay in the family, unless he's planning on selling

Waffen SS Panzer M43 "Dachau"

#22

Post by Bill Garvy » 01 Jan 2003, 18:06

My most recent addition to my collection was a "salty" Waffen SS Panzer M43 cap. All I have at this point is a scan of the trapezoid. The cap was a combined Christmas/retirement gift for myself.

I just found this at a local Flea Market, digging through tables of jewelry (along with a bunch of older US pins I purchased). I think it's a fantasy piece, so I doubt it'll remain in my collection for long

Jewlery

#24

Post by White Leopard » 02 Jan 2003, 22:56

I think the pin you found is a piece that would date from before the First World War or so. In the last part of the 19th Century and the first two decades of the 20th, the swastika was considered to be very fashionable and trendy. There was a sort of fad for items (and jewlery) to be made in that shape. It was considered, in America, to be an American Indian symbol, hence the arrow. I have seen several pins identical to this on E-Bay. They are usually from the 1920's or 1930's.Check the back of the pin to see if it might be sterling silver. Many of them are. I am currently bidding for a silver stick pin of simlar vintage.

interesting. it's small. doesn't say sterling, but it's small. any other potential history? someone told me it might be a 45th Division sweetheart/insignia pin since the division used to use a swastika in the 30s

Jewlery---other possiblities

One other option for your pin: it could be an old Boy Scout insignia. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts used the swastika before WW2 for several designs and badges. The reason for that was the American Indian connection for the symbol that I mentioned before.

I doubt that it is connected to the 45th division, although that division did use the swastika before WW2. I could be wrong about this, however.

that's extremely interesting still. I initially thought it was a fantasy piece, but after closer examination and you guys telling me all this I think it was real for something, but for some reason I tend to think it was just a good luck charm (Native American symbol of luck, and the arrow). I don't see the BSA or Army being able to use such a small pin. I don't know where or how a Boy Scout would be required to wear it.

Either way, whether it's worth 50 bucks or 50 cents, it is an overall intriguing piece that I got a good deal on in a lot, and I will enjoy doing the research on it.

And to think, I almost just listed it as a fantasy piece for ten bucks in my case at an Antique Store. If I sold it, I'd probably be kicking myself because I couldn't do all this research. Wish there were more pics of BSA/US Army items with swastikas on them besides that one shoulder patch. :|

just got this from Member Kim, a nice Machine gun link. Thanks to a few references at The Collector's Guild, I believe it to be an MG-34/MG-42 50 round belt link. Was gonna use it on a display no matter what country, but this is better since it's a German display....ignore the 30-30 rounds, they've been removed
