SS Cigarette Case

#1

Post by ollaetta » 18 Oct 2009, 23:25

I picked up this cigarette case from a dealer who swears it's authentic. Having done a bit of online research I now wonder if it can be. The inner markings refer to Oberscharführer Reinling who was awarded the Knights Cross on 28th March 1943. Trouble is the guy that got that award was Hans Reimling. Could it be a typo by the engraver at the time or by a later forger? I'd be grateful for any opinions.

Ollaetta,
While "anything" is possible.....I'm afraid I'd have some major reservations about this cigarette case. First, the engraving style is trying "too hard" to be Germanic.....too many SS runes, SS unit markings, and SS unit emblems for my taste.....and that's not mentioning the misspelling or the fact it's dated prior to the award of his Knight's Cross (of course, the award date could be differant than the actual date he was approved....but that's another "ball of wax").

Neat looking.....but typical of tons of stuff coming out of Eastern Europe that is totally meant to deceive....unless it had unquestioned provinance I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole! Sorry, and I wish I was wrong....but I don't think so....

Hi,
This is just my opinion, so be calm:
I'd say the box is western. Mechanism looks not eastern. I agree with John about "SS's". Too many. Like russian tryed to get many "SS" in photographs in wartime when photographing dead enemies, so are they trying to put many "SS" in fake objects.
I have seen plenty of eastern, especially russian fakes. I am not saying John is wrong, he absolutely has more talent that I will ever have, but still I have to say this cigarette-box should be saved. This might(80%/20%) be original, at least some of it. If you didn't pay too much, keep it and keep wondering if... :)

Best Wishes,

Scharf

Thanks guys for your interesting opinions.

I've just noticed that the date on the case is actually correct, I typed it incorrectly in my first post. I like the case and I intend to keep it anway. Oh to be able to tell for certain!

Regards,

Oliver

100% fantasy crap.
There is a thread on one of these forums, WAF?with all kinds of these, and i think even AHF has one.
You are right on when stating'''trying too hard"" way to many SS runes, etc.
Am shocked there is NOT an RZM mark :D The front cover SS badge looks like a polished out fake SS badge bought on sites such as Reddick, and is glued on besides??

Mark....
I do "love" those "SS Watches", SS Cigarette Cases, "Overstamped" Russian Coins, most rings, and other similar CRAP that "we" get to rip to shreads.... you obviously enjoy it too!

Usually I figure it's some kid or other "innocent" and try to be alittle kind....but once it plain it's one of the "zombies"... I can be fairly blunt (within the guide lines, of course...) :x

I gave up sex for LENT..... and forgot who I lent it too!........ (probably just as well!)
Later....

Being blunt is really the only way when it comes to**Nazi Zombie militaria** As you know, I do not think there are any *virgin* TR collectors about anymore.Anyone who believes in this type of crap are either a con themselves, haves some trying to pass off as genuine, or just plain ignorant and clueless,
