Japanese "Mystery Box" - what is it?

Hello guys,

I hope I am posting this in the right section!
A friend of mine has received a wooden box from a US marine a while back. It is from the Battle of Guadal canal.
Inside the box there's two papers with Kenji on it. It was used by the Japanese and there was also a heavily worn flag inside the box.
First of all, both of us don't speak Japanese, so we have no idea what it is. Maybe something they used for communicating? Or maybe something for entertainment? Who knows..
I would also like to know if this is an official "artifact" from WW2 and not a fake or anything like that.
Please see the attached pictures for a view of the inside of the box and the top with a description on it. Perhaps anyone here can read Kenji/Japanese?
Thanks in advance!

Regards.

"chesspiece regimental banner" ?
Maybe it is box for tactical map counters ?
Small flags pinned on numbers at bottom.
Paper on lid looks like index chart.

My first reply - that looks to me like a map case/battle planning status box - the symbols look just like the symbols on battle/strategy maps that I have seen in authentic Imperial Japanese Army WW2 training books. The big numbers were most likely a grid system, if rice paper, which is semi-translucent, were laid over the numbers, you would have instant grids to draw your map on. Anyone else have any info, I think that it is from the war and not a game.
