Identification for 40mm round
Identification for 40mm round
Hello everyone
I am new to this forum and hope that I am addressing my question in the right section. I recently purchased a 40mm dummy round and would like to know more about it. It is a 40mm steel round with a red and white tip and it has the following stamp markings at the bottom:
- A anchor sign
- 12-43
- CL- GHB
Also on the side of the shell it has written in black the following information:
LOT FS 2 1024
Also I know that the shell is made of steel because a magnet sticks to it.
Any information is greatly appreciated
Thank You
Tony

Re: Identification for 40mm round
I'm no expert on WW 2 Ordnance markings.... and it's a difficult field because every nation made numerous variations of shell casings... with various markings, color codes, etc. However, some things are "obvious", "12-43" certianly means WW 2, "anchor" means "Naval" (usually), the "Lot FS" markings "English language"... (U.S., British/Canadian, Indian)... but not typical of the 40mm US Rds. (or markings) that I've had so my "guess" so far would be British/Canadian...though there should be a broadarrow ?
Possibly US, but I can only state the obvious... (anyone knowing "CL-GHB" will ID which nation)
Welcome...

The following is a good reference for shells

in particular:

The table of specfic interest is:

Here's the link to the navweapons article on the US 40mm Bofors round.

PLS do make sure it is inert. Some explosives degrade in a maner that makes them quite sensative.

Re: Identification for 40mm round
Sounds like a US Navy Mk II or Mk III40mm Bofors casing. the Lot stamp in black ink is on the side of the casings.

@Tony: a picture is worth more then a 1000 words in this case.
So if possible, 1 picture of the round, plus 1 of the headstamp.

Re: Identification for 40mm round
Thank you for your efforts still do not know the origin of this 40mm round any other suggestions it is the CL-GHB may it be great British ?
Re: Identification for 40mm round
40mm US Navy Mk. 2 or Mk. 3 Bofors shell casing... (assuming those replies are correct)..and I do.. . Would be what I'd expect to see as it's a fairly common casing.... in the collecting world, at least. British made would definately have a Broadarrow (unless missed or lightly stamped and now invisible...)
