You will have to zoom in, but I posted to the admin.who posted this, that the caption is all wrong
His caption stated..Group of B-24's being escorted on bomber mission /Alaska/SEPTEMBER 1944/////
Do you see my concern on the airframes that makes *Bombing Mission/Alaska/SEPTEMBER 1944** all wrong.?
Or do I owe supreme apology?
Wrong caption/description of this picture?

Re: Wrong caption/description of this picture?
Mark,
There would have been "Bomber missions" flown out of our Alaskan Bases even late in the war.... against Manchurian/Japanese land targets as well as Japanese shipping.... notice the lead fighters appear to be P-47s (Thunderbolts) , but those under and over appear to be much earlier P-40s (Curtis Hawkers?)....which were flown in Alaska long after withdrawn from "other" areas of operation.... of course, the location & information could easily be "Mis-information"...as we call it now or just wrong...
John

Re: Wrong caption/description of this picture?
Agree, JohnG......My question is not of what the original caption is-was,,,wrote under pic, but what the new dealer-collector over on another forum posted under this pic that cannot be possible
The new dealer caption states..Bombing mission,September 1944, 1944 being the key point.
See the mistakes?

Re: Wrong caption/description of this picture?
I'm not an "aircraft buff" enough to known.... I assume the "radar pods" or "observation domes" or lg. painted numerals date this out of the time period your talking about.... but you'll have to explain or point out the mistake....

Red colored border around all aircraft national insignia banned as of September 1943/War Dept.Directive.Pointed this out to him, got a
response.I said I wanted to point that mistake out, because then it just percolates when someone else posts a wrong captioned photo, etc. After time it takes on a life and belief of its own.
You know the saying **Well, I saw it on %$@#Forum so it just has to be real**
