Hello,I haven't be on this forum for many years now.But I intend to post here more frequently
This a request for help with identifying a particular of family artefacts
After WW2 my father's uncle gave my dad a number of pieces of equipment such as a flying harness strap and a small belt as well as a section of curtaining that were said to be from a crashed German aircraft. These items have always intrigued me and I've finally decided to work out whether the items are
a)Are German in origin? b)If they aren't German where did they come from? c)What aircraft did the curtaining likely come from?
The story which went with the belts and curtaining is a bit hazy.Supposedly my Great Uncle, who was too young to fight in WW2, salvaged the items from a crashed plane somewhere near his home in Great Lumley in County Durham. As far as I know Bill Norman's Broken Eagles Vol II makes no mention of a German plane crashing anywhere near his home.Perhaps the items came from a British plane or perhaps he obtained the items some other way like a school friend.Maybe during my uncle's days in the RAF in the late 1940s,he got hold of someone else's Luftwaffe wreck mementoes from somewhere. Sadly he died 10 years ago now and we never managed to ask him about the belts and curtaining
Here is a photo of the curtaining belts and perspex that were inherited by my dad
https://web.cloud.virginmedia.com/?shar ... 79022a5e33
It apparently had press stud poppers on the other side but this side looks as if the material was forcefully pulled away from something as the cloth ripped and there are broken eyelet shaped holes.
The red ruler is 15cm/6in long
Any help on working out where the curtain came from would be gratefully received
Thanks
Jonathan
Help with identifying WW2 cockpit blackout curtaining
Re: Help with identifying WW2 cockpit blackout curtaining
You may get some assistance here, but you're looking for information that really only aircraft specialist would know..... being in England, you should try the Imperial War Museum (Aviation section) with your questions.... you should have better pictures, including close ups of the snaps, etc. as those can often ID the nationality.....
Good luck on your quest...
