Hi , here is a pretty rough 1917 Gebr Heller manufactured piece , not sure if the scabbard is of German manufacture ? it is marked to the frog lug ,
L over H and possibly 057 or 957 ? any help on the scabbard greatly appreciated ,
regards
Will.

Hard to tell from the lousey picture... but pretty sure the sheath is a replacement. If the top of the frog stud is straight/horizontal it's a Czech Mauser sheath, (looks like it is)... but can't see well enough to be sure.

Germans didn't number thier frog studs... that's typical of Yugoslavian reissues (from Captured & War Repairation bayonets) which were reworked and renumbered... both WW 1 and WW 2 types....

The S84/98 is a fairly scarce bayonet variation... in it's WW 1 German form. Condition of the bayonet is fairly typical as they saw lot's of use over a long period of time...

Try a better picture showing the "throat" and "frog stud" of the sheath (clearly)... if you want a more definate answer on the sheath...

Will,
The sheath is from a Czech VZ24 Mauser bayonet.... not sure if the marking are Yugoslavian or not... it may have been reworked to fit the S84/98 by the Germans wartime or Yugoslavians postwar using the Czech sheath... they certainly match condition wise.

It would only be "dumb luck" to find a loose WW 1 S 84/98 sheath so I'd leave it "as is", especially if it "runs" in and out smoothly... if stiff or difficult, I might look for a spare German WW 2 sheath... but only if I knew they didn't "belong" together.

Overall condition is "well used" to say the least, but certainly still collectible IMHO....

Thanks for all your help John , most kind. I also believe these have been together a long time , the fit is all good and tight and it "runs" in and out smoothly.
Kind regards
Will
