Is this regulation wear for a dagger?

(The officer is almost certainly a member of Pionier Battalion 222, on active duty in occupied Norway.)

Yes John, it seems to be okay. At least the book "Uniformen und Abzeichen des Deutschen Heeres 1935 - 1945" shows and describe it as Kleiner Dienstanzug and mention that the dagger is worn this way.

Many thanks, history1. It just seemed a bit casual, that's all. Other officers in the same photograph are wearing their daggers more formally : see attached.

What is that spine on the scabbard? Don't believe I've seen one like it before.
