I also have a 1945 M4 bayonet, the leather handle is dry and faded. What is the best way to preserve it?

Nothing will bring it back once "damaged".... "picard's or museum-quality leather treatment helps restore some, don't use saddle soap or Neatsfoot oil, best to do as little as necessary...
