Bought it, now checking for markings. Has a supple leather and wire wrapped grip.24..1/2/''blade,sharp edge..

we have some examples in France, very popular before 1914......... for rich families !!

Agree with your and JhnG assessment. There are some very faint marks on the blade, my wife saw them last night. I am almost blind, so I did not see them , now will use some serious lighting and maybe back light to see. I do see a *crossed sword* type marking, and some sort of name, but till I get some medicine in the eyeballs, will wait

What country would you two think is country of origin, I have it listed as German, pre WW1 era on a couple of for sale sites/groups

The hilt with the curved finial and the two slots is very similar to Austrian Landwehr Mountain Troops short swords.

The crossed sword mark could well be that of Zeitler - sword and bayonet makers

Spot on Richie B.The 1st link with the crossed sword mark is exactly the one on mine. The one on mine looks more detailed and sharp
