SS-Ring and more...
SS-Ring and more...
Hello everyone!
Before my first post, I think it must introduce myself. My name is Marco and my job is to publish books in Italian on the Third Reich (no spam! ^^). I'm also interested in collecting always inherent to the period, but compared to many others are inexperienced.
Here is my first post on a ring that I bought in a major auction house in Germany.
I enclose a picture of the object as it appeared. It was impossible to see the characteristic signs or anything.
Only once in my possession I saw inside and a logo D.R.G.M. is the symbol SS.
I immediately did some research and saw that many indicate the presence of these signs as a fake.
I wrote to the auction house and the answer was before:
"It is a contemporary ring That could be acquired in the trade. D G R M stands for "Deutsches Reich Gebrauchsmuster" and means the German Design Protection "and the second one," this item is not modern reproductions. The mark D.R.G.M. was used from 1891 until 1945. So the description is correct and you are right not to declare it as modern piece. "
Well, now I'm a little confused and wonder if anyone is in possession of more information. Unfortunately the reference books on the recognition of the authenticity of the objects are for the most part in English and being a little technical jargon are useful for me.
Thank you in advance and I hope I have made my first mistake by opening the post here.

Re: SS-Ring and more...
Fake ring! .... DRGM & SS Runes within a diamond is kiss of death.... these fakes have been around for years. Look at how poorly the SS runes are formed, avoid anything SS until you have years of experience collecting!
Sorry!

Re: SS-Ring and more...
Thanks for your reply Mr. John.
The problem is that I have faith in the auction hause and I didn't suppose that it could sell some fakes. And like the pic no marks in the catalogue otherwise I should take information before.
Your answer is the same that I read about similar subject in other places.
Do you know some tests or where I can find detailed information about similar fakes. Because I should look for somithing to have in my hand in order to obtain refound.
Thanks however for the answer and have a good day.

Re: SS-Ring and more...
The DRGM marking might be found on a period ring, but the SS diamond is an inspector's mark... wouldn't be found on a non-regulation commercial ring... there is no test to prove originality, but forums like Wehrmacht Awards forum should have plenty of SS specialist who would attest (one way or the other) to the rings originality.
There may well have been period rings of this design, but wouldn't have the SS proofs in my opinion. I've seen many of these exact DRGM/SS proofed rings which were offered as originals as well as reproductions... I wouldn't give them shelf space myself unless I dug it in Russia myself, and even that is no real proof of anything as they now salt sites with fakes.
Try the SS forums/specialist or Wehr. awards forum... only advice I can give.

Re: SS-Ring and more...
A good rule of thumb is: ANY/ALL SS marks that are in a diamond are FAKE! I've seen them on a variety of metal items such as rings & belt buckles. That mark has been around for at least 20 or 30 yrs.
