No offense but, permit me some casual observations; quizzes are great fun when everyone gets a chance to participate, and even greater fun when everyone learns something. However, this thread seems to be the exclusive club of a few select members, and then this, "OK, an easy one... name this cruiser?" LOL... sure it's easy. It's so easy that it destroyed this thread as no one can come up with an answer. At this rate, this will be a five question a year thread. LOL...

I would suggest that any question be supplied with at least two hints; and after that, if no one can come up with an answer after 72 hours, then the author shall answer the question and go again. Or else this just became a thread stopper. Like wow... great question, you stumped everyone... OK then... dead thread; let's move on... I mean, is the direction here to generate interest or disinterest? :?

Further, in some of the answers, there seems to be a general acceptance that all the facts are as stated. Forgive me, but what is the criteria for accuracy here? Is it based on the "it is because I say so..." school or shall we be required to qualify our answers. Though the former is easy, the latter is probably a bit more academic. Shouldn't each answer be at least supported by two independent sources?

Just some opinions; at any rate, that was my two cents. I'll go back to lurking and others can go back to trying to figure out the easy name of that half sunken Chinese cruiser, whatever it is.

Oh, and in case you like sunken boats, for your viewing pleasure:

this actually is an easy one - this is Hai Tien around off the entrances to Shanghai. ran aground in fog on 25 April 1904 on passage from Chefoo to Shanghai. Total loss except her guns were salvaged.

new question:

Chinese Navy had several ships under construction at Kiangnan when the Japanese took over Shanghai and the shipyard. Two of those ships were completed for the Japanese and were still afloat at the end of the war and returned to the Chinese. Upon return they were given new names:

Chong Ning. 150 tons. 113'x___x___

Ji Lin. 535 tons. 150'x31x9.5

What were their original names and their Japanese names?

Hi,

rjl3's question still hasn't been answered yet. Perhaps he would like to offer up a couple of hints?

HMS Peterel --- Yessir ! There is no such bird however, in my copy of the Oxford English Dictionary. British river gunboats on the Yangtse will give you a clue -- it went aground some years before on the Yangtse, normally a Court Martial offence for the Captain,
but the Yangtse was the exception on the basis that depths were unpredictable. But what SHOULD the name have been ?

Sorry misread the original question; the intended name was of course the Petrel.
