What is this Chinese War medal????

Postby 1943 on 16 Jan 2012 00:51

Looks like this Japanese soldier is wearing the war medals for the "Manchurian Incident" and an unknown Chinese medal. Can anyone help identify it? Thank You!

Hello, very interesting photo!
Are you sure this is a Chinese medal, not Japanese/Manchukouan? If this is captured Chinese medal, maybe it's difficult to identify it because although Manchurian troops had many colourful flags and medals before 1931, most infomation on them has been lost. But if it is a medal of KMT centural government, maybe someone can identify it.

The photos appear to have disappeared, perhaps you can attach them to the thread?

Looks like it's lost it's center medallion....and the ribbon mounting is VERY untypical Japanese form.....but no question the photo is genuine! Starburst design is typical of a couple Grades of Japanese/Manchu. awards....but not exactly. No idear except looks incomplete ...

The star burst design of this medal corresponds to the types of medals made during the "warlord" era or pre-1928. In my opinion, if assuming the ribbon colors of blue white blue white blue, this would be the Order of the Striped Tiger. Probably 8th class judging from his enlisted rank. It would be very rare for enlistedmen, especially of another country, to receive this award! Maybe the medal was damaged, but he was still proud of the achievement to wear a damaged medal. You have to done something amazing and gained attention for a low ranking soldier to receive such high honors.

Is it possible that this man used to serve in a Chinese army in 1920s as an advisor and got this medal for his service? Or is it possible that he just picked it up from Chang Tso-ling's storage in 1931?
