I am reading Daniel Jacksons "Famine, Sword, and Fire" and he mentions a soldier of the 47th Division, 9th Army whose unit was transferred to the 71st Army (Corps) to take part in the Tengchong battles. Can anyone tell me which unit this was?

regards

OK I've found some info on the Chinese wikipedia about the 9th Army (I'd like to call it Corps for accuracy sake), I'll put the link here:
https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/國民革命軍第九軍#中國抗日戰爭時期

So a short timeline of the 47th Division during WWII:
  • June 1938
47th Division incorporated into the 9th Corps, stationed along the Yellow River (Shanxi Province north of the river fell in late-1937)
    1939-1940
participated in the Winter Offensive as a part of the Second Military Region (第二战区) at the time. The 1939-1940 Winter Offensive was one of China's first major offensive against the Japanese on multiple fronts.
    May 1941
9th Corps switched to the First Military Region, participated in the Battle of South Shanxi (晋南会战) aka the Zhongtiao Mountain Campaign (中条山战役)
    late-1942
47th Division put under direct command of the First Military Region, and no longer belonged to the 9th Corps
    1944
9th Corps went on to fight the Battle of Central Henan (豫中会战, a part of the Japanese Ichi-Go Offensive) while the 47th went on to somewhere else I don't know...According to your book it was prpobably placed under the 71st Corps

Many thanks, especially when I hardly distinguished myself in the poor title of my question. Actually it appears his regiment left the 47th Division/9th corps to join a division of the 71 Corps in 1944 but which regiment it was has eluded me, and it was this unit that I was searching for.

best regards

Well, information about the Chinese military during that time is always scarce, you can find pretty detailed divisional histories online if you look hard enough (and can read Chinese). But I'd say the chances of you actually tracing down to the history of a specific regiment (without going to museums and reading through archives) is pretty slim.
