They are 3rd Infantry Brigade from 2nd Division and 13th Infantry Brigade from 7th Division. They were under the direct control of North-China Expeditionary Army.

P.S.
iB means Infantry Brigade in the IJA.

Interesting, neither of my other sources mentions them at all. The Chinese history mentions other brigades though, but I dont have a lot of confidence in it.

Do you have any idea who commanded them?

Brigades in the Hsuchow campaign

#38

Post by asiaticus » 06 Mar 2006, 03:35

Interesting, Major Gen. Tadao Yoshizawa was also in command of the Brigade during the Nomohan Incident in 1939.

These Brigades are from divisions ordinarily detailed to the Kwangtung Army. I understood the 7th Division to be the Kwangtung Army mobile reserve Division. I beleive the 2nd was also one of their better Divisons and sent a Brigade to the Nomanhan Incident late in the campaign but not this one.

I did not know the Kwangtung Army was still sending troops to China at this date. I would guess this would have been to support the Hsuchow offensive?

Where there any other such assignments of brigades in the IJA army in this campaign?

From this:
IJA in China orbat, 1937 to 1945
http://www.china-defense.com/forum/inde ... topic=2726

the North China Army had the China Stationed Infantry Brigade, and the 3rd 4th and 5th Independent Mixed Brigades. My understanding is that the China Stationed Infantry Brigade and 5th Independent Mixed Brigades were with 2nd Army, while the 3rd and 4th Independent Mixed Brigadeswere with 1st Army.

Hsu Long-hsuen's History of The Sino-Japanese War claims several brigades in the Japanese oob not listed above. This is one oob list that seems quite a bit out of kilter. I am wondering if any of these were right at all.

With the North China Army, 1st or 2nd Army:

-105th Brigade/113th Div. - Shozo Motogawa
-compositiion?

- A brigade of 111th Div. - Yamamoto
-compositiion?

- 121st Brigade / 105th Divison - Lt. Gen. Itada
-compositiion?

- Bulk of Yamashita Army? - commander?
-compositiion?

- a portion of Sakai Army? - commander?
- Senda Unit - ?

- a portion of 120th Divison - commander?
-compositiion?

For Central China Expeditionary Force:

- A portion of 11th division - commander?
10th Infantry Brigade/ llth Division [4]
- 12th Infantry Regiment
- 22nd Infantry Regiment

- 111th Brigade, 106th Divison - Yanagawa

- a portion of 101st Division - Keinosuke Inutsuka

- a portion of 116th Division - Sato
116th Division [4]

- Konoye Division - Teiko Itado

My other source below doesn't mention any of these except the ones marked [4]:

> I did not know the Kwangtung Army was still sending troops to China at this date. I would guess this would have been to support the Hsuchow offensive?

Yes. They returned to the Kwangtung Army after the battle.

> Where there any other such assignments of brigades in the IJA army in this campaign?

Sato Detachment (101st Infantry Brigade/101st Division)
Sakai Detachment (11th Infantry Brigade/6th Division)

They were both under the Central-China Expeditionary Army. But, both did not directly participate in the battle of Hsuchou. They were in charge of flank offensive.

> the North China Army had the China Stationed Infantry Brigade, and the 3rd 4th and 5th Independent Mixed Brigades. China Stationed Brigade was under the direct control of the North China Expeditonary Army. Others are correct.

116th Division (Lt. Gen. Shimizu) was assigned to the Central China Expeditionary Army. But, it was after the battle of Hsuchou. Other units are mistakes.

Hsuchow campaign map

Hsuchow campaign map from Hsu Long-hsuen and Chang Ming-kai, History of The Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) 2nd Ed. ,1971. Translated by Wen Ha-hsiung , Chung Wu Publishing; 33, 140th Lane, Tung-hwa Street, Taipei, Taiwan Republic of China.

This shows actions over time, although just who is doing what is very vague and has to be followed in the text of the book.

> Which units where these two units with.?

They were not attached to division or other unit. Mechanized task forces which consisted of tank battalion and some support units were organized and they rushed on the flank of the Chinese forces. The task force of 1st Tank Battalion went up from south and that of 2nd Tank Battalion went down from north.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought the 1st Battalion was still in the North China front.

So 1st Battalion was with the Central China Expeditionary Army at this time? Were they then on the far Western flank of the 13th Division sweep north to the west of Hsuchou?

You say there were attached support units to these Tank Battalions. What were they typically? Or were they more a customized task force suited to the occassion?

Would these Task forces be commanded and named after the Tank Battalion commander? Or would it be some other officer typically?

> So 1st Battalion was with the Central China Expeditionary Army at this time?

Yes. It moved to Central China from North China before the battle.

> Were they then on the far Western flank of the 13th Division sweep north to the west of Hsuchou?

They dashed forward before the 13th Division and destroyed the bridge to cut the railway. See uploaded map.

> You say there were attached support units to these Tank Battalions. What were they typically?

Iwanaka Detachment
1st Tank Battalion
17th Independent Tankette Company
1st Battalion/14th Infantry Regiment
One platoon of 19th Mountain Gun Regiment
A part of 1st Independent Engineer Company
One Independent Motorcar Company
A part of 13th Divisional Signal Unit

> Would these Task forces be commanded and named after the Tank Battalion commander?

Yes. They were called Iwanaka Detachment and Imada Detachment
