Ante Pavelic Escape

Postby GLADIVM on 03 Sep 2003 08:05

Ante Pavelic , the Poglavnik of Croatia , was the only Axis leader to effect a succesfull escape afetr WWII , but detals about it are still sketchy , especially about the initial stages .

Some sources indicate that in early May 45 Pavelic and some of the Ustashi leadership left Zagreb by plane and landed in Austria , but this seems difficult as by then all airports were in dredfull conditions or in the hands of the Allied .
Other sources say that he left Zagreb with a big convoy of official cars and trucks toghtere with elements of his bodyguard but later on finished gasoline and due to road congestion he continued on foot from Slovenia and somehow managed to cross the border with Austria where instead most of the Croation forced were stopped by the British and eventually delivered to Tito's bands who slaughtered them in droves .

Also it is said that Pavelic was in british custody but was released at least twice and the americans later accused the british to protect Pavelic .
For which political reasons the british should have protected avelic in the summer of 45 escapes me as otherwise they delivered all their eastern prisoners to the Russians or other Eastern Europe communist states .

But Pavelic had at his disposal huge amount of money , it is mentioned a figure of 100 Millions US$ at the value of the times , so he might have been able to buy his freedom .

It seems he spent summer of 1945 at San Gilgen near Salzburg and later moved , always in the british zone to Klagenfurt and was guest in a villa owned by the Archibishop of Klagenfurt also he was reported to be in the Archibishop official residence in the city .

In July 45 he was arrested again but apparently not recognized and released , so he donned monk gear and hid in a monastery in the area .
Pavelic's daughter in an interview in 1990 gave a different account and said that he used to stay in chalet far in the mountains surrounding Klagenfurt and his only company was an italian woman as housekeeper .
She also mentioned the she and her mother met the Poglavnik frequently met him in the woods taking precautions of not being followed .

In April 46 believing that Klagenfurt was getting too dangerous he moved , probably by foot , to Rome where he was under the protection of Father Draganovic .
At that time Pavelic had a passport under the name of Don Pedro Gomes and posed as a priest , for few months he hid in the Pope summer residence of Castelgandolfo but believing to be under surveillance of the American OSS in July he left Rome and returned to Austria .

By the end of 1946 Pavelic was again in Rome and in feb 47 was reported to be hiding in the Istituto San Gerolamo of which Father Draganovic was secretary , in the same Institute also hid other Croatians and Germans .

The Americans seems knew of Pvelic whereabouts and of the protection granted to him by the Pope but not willing to embarass the Catholic Church as a bulwark against Communism was very useful to the americans at the beginning of the Cold war the left Pavelic alone .

Pavelic was reported to move freely in Rome form one Catolic insitution to another but always using official Vaticans vehicles which granted to him extraterritorial protection .
Finally he left Italy on 13 sept 47 by the vessel Sestriere under the name of Pablo Aranyos as Hungarian displaced person and reached Argentina where he was well received by Peron .

these infos are taken from various sources , the book Rat Lines of M.Arons & J Loftus , various history magazines , Pavelic daughter account & some internet sources .

Would anyone be able to add the missing pieces , specially in the early stages of Pavelic escape ??

He given an order to his Offic. to escape from Zagreb on 28.4.1945 at 2.00 am. On Sunday 6.5.1945 he escaped from Zagreb with his son Velimir. He spent a night in his house in Novima Dvorima kod Zaprešića (sp?). Next night he goes to Rogaška Slatina (Slovenia). On 8.5.1945 (when Zagreb was liberated) he was past the border somewhere in neighboor-hood of Maribor in his Marcedes (given to him by Hitler). Then he was travilling through Spielfled (sp?), Klagenfurt and Wolfsberg.

Do you need more info after this?

Thanks for yr quick answer and all details of the early stages of escape .

Would you confirm if somehow the british knew of his presence in their zone and protect him letting him through instead of blocking at the border and delivering to the communists ?

Also was Pavelic really sheltered by the Church Authorities in Rome ?

The book Rat lines also indicates that Pavelic was seldom alone and had always around one or two of his most trusted bodyguards , is it true ?

What happened to his son Velimir ? I know his daughter is married to one of the neofascist leaders of Croatia .

On the way that I described it, he was with his "food-advicer" (I don't know how to write English word  ) Erich Lisak, colonel in Ustaša army.

BTW. Commander of his Personal Guard was Colonel in Ustaša army and General of Domobran army Ante Moškov. During the "trip" he was in command of about 60 Guards who protected their Leader. In his escort were also:
- general Vilko Begić,
- general Đuro Grujić,
- commander of Ustaše Youth - Ustaška mladež (Croatian version of HJ) Felix Niedzielski,
- Dolores Bracanović,
- Colonel Erich Lisak,
- his son Velimir,
- commander of Secret Service (like SD) Ivan Kirin "Ico".

This goes on!

When Pavelić was in Leibnitz, he had changed his uniform for civilian clothes and they went on foot from there on (probably - I'm not to sure). on the road Judenburg-Trieben, his group was split up - with him stayed:
- son,
- Bracanović (BTW she was commander of girls section of Ustaše Youth),
- Lisak,
- his driver Rebernišak,
- Kirin.

He then went to Langreit (at Hintersee) to his family (his wife Marija (also called Mara) and his 2 daughters Mirjana and Višnja). He was then stationed there and other protection (!) of German ministey of foreign mathers. When was he stationed there, he sent his Adj., Colonel Nikola Crisomali (sp) to US commander in Salzburg. He agreed - he gave permission that Pavelić stays there. To his "HQ" then aslo came minister Balen and Sušič. According to Crisomali Pavelić came to his HQ on 15.5., on 16.5. he went to US C.i.C (Counter Intel. Corps), where they given him permission to stay there. On month later on 14. or 15.6. Pavelić disapered from HQ; then also his son. Other family was then transfered to hotel in St. Gilgen. (BTW. With him there were also about 370 kg of gold!!!!!! He had stolen about 2,400 kg from Croatian banks.) Then he was hiding in some salt-mines and monesteries.

From Austria to Italy he was going with Peru (!) passport as catholic father. When he camo to Rome, there were some ex-Ustaše personal of their ambassy waiting for him (here was already his son).

Still going on...

highly unlikely , why would the British deliver the official Croatian government representative Nikola Mandic to partizans and protect Pavelic whom was number 1 on wanted list ?
After reading books written by NDH Minister Vrancic on his efforts to reach allied governments and general treatment received it would seem very illogical for the British to be protecting Pavelic.

In Italy he was using the name Petar (Peter) Gomes and Pater Benares. He was helped by ODESSA and Sie Spinne (La Arana). In Rome he wa staing in Collegium Croaticum. On 31.12.1946 he shipped out from Italy with SS Sestriere to Buenos Aires. On 3.1.1947 West allies notifed Yugoslavia that Pavelić is not in Italy (!?). Came to Argentina on 6.11.1948 (?).

I speak a few languages but unfortunately Serbo-Croat is not one of them and at my age is quite difficult to learn a new one .

Anyhow it seems that Pavelic had quite a few protectors besides the Church , as he was at least twice under arrest or guest of Allied commanders and still managed to get away .
Do you think the gold he had played a big role in his escape ?

Instead all other Axis leaders who happened to be caught by the Allies
(Szalasi , etc ,) were later delivered to the communists .

Admiral Horty also managed to escape repatriation burt I guess his case was different .

i read a biography of josef mengele called "the last nazi". the author made a convincing case that ODESSA was not a real organization, but something imagined by nazi hunters. the book points out how clumsy so many nazis were at getting forged documents in south america and how easily they were discovered when actively searched for by journalists and others.

from what i've read escaping post ww2 europe was nearly as difficult as some would believe. europe was in ruins, flooded with refugees, and new documents were not that difficult to aquire. often the war criminals relatives would provide the money to escape. in the case of many notorious nazi war criminals, they did not flee europe for 2,3, or 4 years after ww2 ended. the allies would capture importnat nazis, then let them go for whatever reason. rearrest people, let them go again. in post ww2 europe the cold war took hold quickly, and the pursuit of war criminals was not a priority.

after reading gerald astor's "the last nazi", i'm not convinced ODESSA was ever in existence. gerald astor points out that one nazi hunter who supported the idea of an ODESSA organization also claims to have shot in killed josef mengele in a south american jungle in the early 1970's.

i think any information that includes ODESSA as part of the equation should be taken with a grain of salt.

In the book that I have, it's meantioned that Pavelić used the gold for expenses and gived also to his staff, family, guards,... in 50 or 100 pieces of gold in the bag. The author wrote, that during his stay in Austria gold was "official currency", soo it's possible that he bribed some Allied officals/soldiers.

I do not know if Odessa ever existed and if it did was not very effective as most of the premused benefactor of its service , once arrived in South America , mostly using passports supplied by the Church , were left to their own devices and had no protection at all by Odessa , at best they got an introduction in same overseas German concern or ccompanies so realted , see Stangl , Eichmann , Wagner .
Mengele who came from a rich family was a case a part but also him received no help from exilee organisations but only from willing individuals often bought by his family money .

Pavelic did not need Odessa as a prtector he had other two much more effective , The Catholic Church and the Gold or money he managed to take away from Croatia probably with the help of the Vatican bank .

Kocjo , I have one more question , the guy who shot Pavelic was an agent of Tito's police or just one individual who had personal grudges against the Ustasha ? Or may he was both and was used by Tito to get at Pavelic .
Also could you tell of the shootings dynamics and details ?

Thanks

Thanks Major.
Because I'm from Slovenia, I undestand (not all, but enough) Serbo-Croat. I asked GLADIVM that, because I have a book on Pavelić in Serbo-Croat language.

Thanks anyway,
Kocjo
