Hungarians?

Postby B Hellqvist on 10 May 2011 21:01

I got this photo in a lot with German photos. As far as I know, the soldiers in the photo are Hungarians, but the caps make me unsure. Did the Hungarian army introduce peaked caps after the sidecaps, and if so, is my guess that the soldiers are Hungarians correct?

(BTW, the photo is for sale if anyone is interested. The pic here is cropped, and the original is smaller in real life.)

those are certainly hungarian with their 95m carbine. I don't know when the new cap was introduce but it seems common on the 1944 pictures of hungarian soldier.

The Hungarians uses peaked caps prior to 1944, but they had a visor like regular officer caps, crushers etc.

But in 1944 they introduced the new "M44" cap modelled after the German M43.

Hope this helps!

For the men in the photo, judging by the shape of their caps I'd say they're actually Austrian soldiers, as they used very similar uniforms and gear as the Hungarians during the post-WW1 years. If I were you I'd post your photo here as well;

The caps look like Austrian to me or Finnish is not out of the question. The 1944 Hungarian caps had more pointed peaks. Besides, Hungarian soldiers would rarely take off their wide service belts. But I do not have a final answer.
