Where in Romania is this?
Where in Romania is this?
Can anybody identify the castle in this photo? All the information I have is that the photo is taken in Romania:
Re: Where in Romania is this?
Hi,
I would suggest asking the question on Romania in WW2 photos, FB link is https://www.facebook.com/rom.ww2
They have the necessary expertise to identify the building if an identification is possible.
I don't mind asking the question myself if there is any trouble for you.
regards,
Adrian

Re: Where in Romania is this?
Sadly, this could be an example of what was recently discussed on this thread, particularly on pages 3 and 4:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=189050
Inquiries and commentary picked up on Axis History Forum and continued on Face Book. The majority of the Axis History Forum members do not belong to Face Book and never will, hence the outcome of this discussion will never be known to them. The way to keep that from happening is for Adrian to post the photo and question on FB and direct that any replies be posted directly to this thread on AHF which Adrian would provide a link to.

Yes, that is always a problem when a question is posted in forum/medium A and then directed to forum/medium B. In such cases I think it is good manners to post the relevant replies form forum B in the original forum too.

Hi,
Without being an expert, I think there are technical solutions to (partially) integrate a forum with FB, FB social plug-in comes in mind.
I'll direct the original question to the FB group admin (to get maximum coverage and have the best chance of having an id).
If there will be a positive identification, I'll keep you updated.
cheers,
Adrian

Re: Where in Romania is this?
Thanks for keeping us updated on the replies from there.
We have the same problem when a question is for example directed to a (non-Facebook) forum that is not available for non-members so it is not a problem unique to Facebook but the rise of Facebook has in a way made it a more common problem for all those of us who prefer not to be active there.

If you could ask the question on that forum I would really appreciate it! I tried matching the photo to photos of Romanian castles but could not find anything.
Re: Where in Romania is this?
P.S. Perhaps its not a castle but some sort of palace or city hall?
Re: Where in Romania is this?
Hi,
Some research shows it's the Puma legion, documented here: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=80503
According to the link above they were trained in Piatra-Neamt and Iasi.
However, the building's architecture is not representative for old (pre-1918) Romanian territories so I have doubts it's any of the two cities mentioned.
Furthermore, the site here: http://reibert.info/forum/showthread.php?p=3507396 (same picture is shown) says the picture was taken after the legion was disbanded, not during their training in PN/Iasi. If correct, this makes Piatra-Neamt or Iasi an even less likely match for the picture.
The logical guess would be Czernowitz, at that time within Romanian borders. It's just a guess, we'll see if someone can come up with a positive identification.
cheers,
Adrian

Well done, Ronald!
I was intrigued where in RO it might be, turns out it's not in RO at all.

Re: Where in Romania is this?
Thank you very much for the help guys! However this adds more mystery - why did former Puma members ended up in Heidelberg? I would assume that, that is the place where they got distributed according to their skills to various German army branches (probably as translators or sonderfuhers). Some got in WH and some in Luftwaffe.
