U Boat training in the Baltic and air dropped mines

#1

Post by balticsea1 » 30 Mar 2015, 22:16

Hi, can anyone tell me where I can find properly sourced information (sadly only in English) on U Boat training in the Baltic during WW2? I would like to find material about the extent of the training including the size of the training establishments. I am also looking for details of the effect that air dropped mines (ground/influence mines) had on the training schedule and any first hand accounts from U Boat crews about the air mine danger off their bases. I have tried to get a response on other forums but no luck. Please! Can anyone suggest any books?

Hello,

I don''t have any book reference on this topic.

However on the topic of mining effects, you may want to have a look at a paper called Smart Mining without Smart Mines, which can be found here.

From memory there are also data in Roskill's War at Sea, but mainly (only?) from the British side - the effect on the German has to be largely infered.
