U-Boote for the Regia Marina.
Hello to all ; a little story........................................
U 1161 Type VIIC (former S 8).
The U 1161 was originally called "S 8" for Italy. It should serve as a compensation for the surrender of Italian transport submarines. After the capitulation of Italy in September 1943, the boat was taken over by the German navy. The first kaleun was TV Federico de Siervo, who was also first commander of the U 429 (former S 4). Both of them were built in Danzig.............................

Hello to all ; something more to share ............................................
Italian U Boats "S" Class.
In the spring of 1943 an agreement was sealed between both Axis's Navies, whereby the Regia Marina ceded nine submersibles (Archimede - Brin Class, Barbarigo and Capellini - Marcello Class, Finzi and Tazzoli - Calvi Class, Bagnolini and Giuliani - Liuzzi Class ; Torelli and Da Vinci - Marconi Class), which served on the Atlantic Base of Bordeaux (Betasom) to be used as transport ships to the Far East and instead the Kriegsmarine ceded nine Type VIIC submersibles under construction in the Danzig shipyards. Finally, only seven Italian submersibles were given as Archimede and Da Vinci were lost during their operational patrols in April and May 1943. According to some sources, the Commander of Betasom, C.V. (Captain) Enzo Grossi realized that his units were no longer able to fulfill the planned operational missions and proposed then the change to Admiral Dönitz.
In order to man the new submersibles, designated S1 to S9, were used the crews experienced in the submarine war and veterans in the Battle of the Atlantic, to a large extent coming from Betasom (three commanders: Arillo, Longhi, Siriani, came from the Mediterranean). As Commander of Group of Submersibles S of Danzig (Italgruppe / Marigammasom) was designated the C.C. (Lieutenant Commander) Alberto Galeazzi. The German Type VIIC submersibles were being completed under the normal Kriegsmarine program at the Danzig shipyards (U 428 - 430 and 1161 at Danziger Werft and U 746 - 750 at Schichau). The Italian crews arrived in Danzig at the end of the spring of 1943 and were accommodated in the passenger ship Deutschland (21,000 tons).
As part of the intense instruction, apart from the theoretical lessons, the crews visited the shipyards and the base of Flensburg and particularly the commanders received intensive training on the use of torpedo, firing systems and mission and tactical use of the submarine.

Italian U Boats "S" Class.
Finding out more, according to an agreement of June 1943 between the Marina Regia and the Kriegsmarine, it was designated a tenth submersible under construction at the Danziger Werft shipyard to be delivered to the Italians as S 10 (U 1162). This ship would replace as an operative unit an unnamed Italian submersible, possibly the Brin and Dandolo that were in the Mediterranean where they would be transformed into transport unit to sail to the Far East.

On September 8, 1943 the news of the armistice took the group by surprise, although only eight of the crews were in Danzig at that time; The S-1 crew was licensed in Italy after completing basic training and the U boat returned to the shipyard for minor repairs. The Germans knew the news a few hours earlier than the group commander. The only measure taken by the Kriegsmarine in this regard was to place a sentry on the tender ship and ask the Italians to refrain from moving around the base.
After an agreement between the authorities of the Kriegsmarine and Captain Galeazzi, who had communicated with CV Grossi, on September 19, 1943 the nine U boats were returned to the German navy. The crews, about 500 men, remained in confinement for some weeks until another agreement was reached with the German authorities according to two possible solutions:
1st To continue the fight alongside Germany forming part of the Italian Social Republic.
2nd To be transferred to a German prison camp in Poland until the end of the armed conflict.
Only ten percent of the men, including Commander Longhi of the S 7, chose the second option, the rest was transferred in October by rail to Bordeaux under the command of CV Grossi. Subsequently some of them formed a unit of minesweeper that operated in the coastal area of Arcachón on the Atlantic and others received other assignments in Italy.

Hello,
It's a kind of slide to slide the torpedo in the hull.
Best regards,
Lionfish

Hello Lionfish ; thanks for joining. Yes, it seems, but I saw that kind of arrangement while the U-boat was in port. Cheers. Raúl M .
