UF 2

I'm looking for informations on the U-boat UF 2, wich was a french submarine seized by Germans?
My father was working on it when the submarine was under construction, at Le Havre. But I don't know anything more about this sub.

The UF 2 is currently one of my favourite subject!


The UF-2 submarine was previously the French submarine La Favorite (and not the “Favourite”). This sub was one the Aurore-class, seized by Germans in Le Havre (France) in June 1940. At this time, the Favorite was under construction. It was commissioned by the Kriegsmarine in November 1942 and used in Kiel (5 flotilla) and after in Bergen (U- Abwehrschule) as training submarine.
The Favorite was scrapped in Gotenhafen in 1945 after self-destruction.

Krvkpt. Georg Lange was commander from 11.42 to 10.43
Oblt. Heinrich Gehrken was commander from 10.43 to 07.44

Displacement: 900 tonnes (surfaced) - 1170 tonnes (submerged)
Length: 73.5 metres
Beam: 6.5 metres
Draught: 4.2 metres

Propulsion: Diesel: 3000 cv , Electrical 700 cv
Speed: 15,50 knots (surfaced) - 9,30 knots (submerged)
Range: 5600 nm at 10 knots (surfaced) - 90 nm at 5 knots (submerged)
Depth: 100 m

Armament:
9 x 550 mm torpedo tubes
2 x 13.2 mm machine guns
1 x 100 mm deck gun

Dear Hautpoul and Stril, thanks a lot for your beautiful pictures The first show us a part of the hull but il will be interesting to see a picture of the entire sub on surface. Perhaps one of you have one?

Currently no idea about this "box"

The box used to insert when not in use a loop antenna, is a radio antenna.

It must be a german modification added after launching. I've never seen such a radio antena on french submarines.

When this picture was taken? The coning tower seems to be very aerodynamic.

Another question: I didn't find "U- Abwehrschule" in Bergen, only the 11 flotilla--> is it the same thing?

The picture was taken in 1940, in front of Toulon.
French submarines design was probably more developed than others.

German submarine schools were mainly based in Baltic sea. I do not know if there was such a school in Bergen: perhaps somebody can answer???

The U- Abwehrschule was at Hatvik in Os, a few miles outside Bergen. Some of the staff had offices in Bergen.
