Hi, i've been reading the threads here for a few weeks, great forum very informative, so just signed up. so hello, many of my friends dive and like myself very interested in u boat era, in particular ww2. but found the discovery of this ww1 uboat at the entrance to cork harbour interesting, UC 42 was a coastal minelayer. laying tube mines at the entrance of cork harbour on 10th sept 1917,when it is beleived it struck one of its own mines, the explosion resulted in the deaths of 27 crew. british divers clearing the harbour in 1919 were thought to have destroyed the hull, but in nov 2010 a group of amature divers discovered the boat, and after confirmation of the id on the propeller UC 42 was found to be in fairly good conditition. a plaque was placed on the hull in jan of 2011 in memory of the 27 souls, UC 42 is now a designated war grave.
