I have been curious about certain references to "Marder II" (and III), but in a british report I recently got there's a note saying the germans officially renamed the "Neger" to "Marder I" on 21. July 1944, and subsequently, the "Marder" is actually "Marder II" from this date (ref also the attached image from a report made by Adm Heye to the allies in may 1945).
The source for the name-change is the german document PG 33607 (not available from NARA, so I reckon BaMa is the only option if it still exists).
"Marder III" are most likely the "Hai"..? ( http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... f#p1756664 )
Launching Midget Submarines (Neger/Marder)
Re: Launching Midget Submarines (Neger/Marder)
The French book "Seine de Guerre 26 août-31 août 1944" by Thierry Chion, 2010, mentions several human torpedoes that did not make it across the Seine river during the German retreat and were abandonned in the Brotonne Forest and at the crossing town of La Mailleraye, both west of Rouen.
The following picture from that book identifies the sub as a Marder. However, I think it is a Neger, based on the short length of the nose.
I've found several Neger units that operated along the Normandy coast and were based at Villers-sur-mer (Calvados), hence, south of the Seine river, in the first half of August 1944: K-Flottillen 361, 362 or 362. However, I've not found any Marder units ever based south of Le Havre.
