Both pictures are from the Finnish Military Photo Archive (SA-kuva).

Hi
Do not think any type VIIC's were in Kirkenes on 15th May.
88,376,378,456,251 and 589 were in Kirkenes the first week of May 1942.
Am I correct or cam someone give out more info?
Regards

Hello

On the left is boat built by F Schichau GmbH, Danzig (I`m sure), and on the right a boat built by Deutsche Werke AG, Kiel. (I`m sure).

Some details suggests me that the boat on the left is U 435 (but the visible emblem is unknown to me). The boat on the right is U 454 or U 456.

On the second picture is U 456.

Hi,

All the photos have their original description texts. However, Forum member Mangrove states in thread http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 6&start=15
...the date marked on the photographs is the date when the film laboratory received them.
so the photos could have been taken earlier than the date mentioned.

If you like to download 5 MB versions of these pictures, go to http://sa-kuva.fi/ and type the picture numbers 146792 and 146788 to the search box.

Hi
I believe the boat on the left is U 435. The emblem on the tower is of a knight from the teutonic order with a papal staff and a black crossed shield and a sword. The black crossed shield being on the wappen of Marienberg whose castle was founded by the teutonic knights.

To add to my above the other boat is probably U454 as the terminal mounting hole in it's conning tower is higher than the one in U 456.

Hi
The boat on the right of the picture has a man wearing an army uniform in the conning tower, by the
colour of the uniform piping could be infantry or signals.

HI John
Yes you could well be right -did not consider other arms of the service.

Yet the main problem with this photo is-if you download the high resolution copy it's full of grain and shows less detail in some areas.

We need a newer scan from our friends in Finland.

I think one of U-boat is 435 and the right one is 456 and we all know that these U-boats were secret weapons of germany during world war2.
