Can't be U 1165. That boat operated mostly in the Baltic and is only credited with sinking a Soviet minesweeper.

Plus deck gun is present...would put that at a pre-1943 boat.

But on the commissioning photo, which is also named as U 1165, there is no gun!!
Also in the other photos there is another white capped commander!
Strange

Gun was mounted on several boats operating in the Baltic during august 1944 - february 1945 (for example: U 242, U 290, U 348).
I think on this photo is U 1165 entering Danzig (25 october 1944) together with U 370. And so, there is other commander present and a sailor with cap emblem from this boat.
U 1165 was fitted with a Schnorchel about february - march 1945.

OK, but why 1165 flying 6 flags, according to Rohwer only one confirmed but maybe Homann thought more???
Glad your back!

Nice photo....good composition in my opinion. But the boat was historically irrelevant......that is to say...not "famous" like U 99 or U 66....or some other boat that had great success with larger than life Captains. Yet it sells for 186,00 euro!!

These old original photos are getting to be quite rare and as such are selling at a premium.

Cheers..I met the first mate of this boat Wolfgang he lives on the west coast of Canada and is in his 90's now still fit guy I saw many many pics of this boat and the crew including one of the captain with his wife and new baby after the war Wolfgang immigrated to Canada and lost track of these men the first pic looks like the boat it did have 2 Gun decks behind tower and the crew pictures look the same as the ones he showed me it is likely they survived the war because they were not a frontline Atlantic boat and we're actually based in Norway they did number of missions and did sink a Russian boat including other boats but there was no documentation so no credit they were also apparently depth charge a number of time ...cheers
