A prime example of how the U boat war was not faught-propaganda and Dick tracy comic strip "The Brow" to the contrary.....

The real loss of tankers and frieghters off US Shores was due to:
1) Refusual of Merchant Marine to stop acting that it was peacetime-sail in weak convoys than singlely and alone.
2) Refusual of US Navy to delagate destroyers to convey duty--better a weak defense than no defense at all
3) Refusual of US Navy to head Royal navy expertise on tracking U-boats
4) Refusual of US Navy to understand that battles at sea are not always won by Big Battleships in one great battle {The only time this ever happen in a modern war was Jutland in 1916--a stalemate for both sides!}

If loses on each side were compared durung the first months of the Battle of the atlantic -with the heavier loss fortelling defeat-than Dontiz would have been the victor! {I think German losses were 1 killed and 1 wounded}

Were the DD's available? Especially considering the situation in the Pacific. It's not at all clear that a large convoy with a weak escort is better than small or no convoys. Now better coordination with the USAAF and anti submarnine air patrols would have helped and not required a great deal more resources I think. Likewise blacking out the coastal cities.

I simply don't see any evidence of this. Oh and I'd consider Tushima a rather classic and modern example of the "Decisive Battle".

Situation was a lot more complex than your posting would indicate.

.. and the ships themselves ! According to u-boat logbooks, US merchant ships were running with bright navigation lights.
