Training and coastal u-boats

#1

What types of u boats were used for training? Doenitz said he would commit every uboat he had, including the training boats, for sealion. That gave him 40 uboats, half of them trainers. I suppose these boats would have instructors for officers but only partly trained crews, so they would not be very effective even if they were the best types of ships. Would they have been any good?

Also, how did coastal u-boats hide when they were in shallow waters, e.g. The English channel?

Hi How did uboats hide in the channel? Sonar/asdic beams detect metal but they also react to disturbed water as in uboat wakes, depth charging, thermal layers and underwater currents. The channel being serviced by a large number of rivers on both sides and in the middle of two vast areas of water is full of various tides and currents which the uboats used to conceal themselves. To put it briefly moving water distorts the sonar/asdic beam.

regards MH
