Gents,
Attached is a page from a Wehrpaß to a member of Hafenschutzflottille Kanalinseln. He was killed on the 14.6.1944 in the Port of Guernsey on a Hafenschutz Boot.
Currently the only references I can find to any action is an aerial attack by USAAC P-47 on St. Peter Port, Guernsey against U-275. No damage was sustained against the U-Boot however two crew aboard the Dutch ship Karel were killed and two injured.
However another source states:
17.15 hrs: U-275 was attacked by twelve British Typhoons from RAF Sqdn 263 when leaving the harbour of St. Peter Port, Guernsey. The U-boat was not damaged, but two of the escorting patrol vessels were. (Sources: BdU)
What is confusing is, the holder of the Wehrpaß is buried in Mont-de-Huisnes in France. Not sure how he got there, unless his body was not recovered and ended up drifting to France?
Any views, additional info would be greatly appreciated.
/Ian

hi, Ian,
greetings, the pb
According to the German War Graves Commission (Kriegsgräberfürsorge), the bodies of 11.956 dead German soldiers, women and children were transferred to Mont-de-Huisnes (as the central German war cemetery in the North-West of France) in 1961 from several cemeteries in the eight French departements Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Vienne, Indre, and from the Channel Islands.Ian Jewison wrote: What is confusing is, the holder of the Wehrpaß is buried in Mont-de-Huisnes in France. Thanks Pb,
That explains a lot.....will dig into this a little further if I can. I had a glance through "The War in the Channel Islands. Then and Now" and did not see this incident recorded but there is a reference regarding graves.
