Hi
Can anyone tell me the dates that the wearing of the Kriegsmarine greatcoat was allowed.
I believe it will help to date photographs of commissioning U-Boats.
regards. MH.

Hi Mark
I have some pre-war fotos of commissioning and the officers are wearing greatcoats. Foto of U 35 which was commissioned in November 1936 is one. So I think it was "winter dress.
I,m sure someone will tell us.

HI.
Still no more info on greatcoats, U 622 was commissioned in the month of May 1942 and the officers were all in greatcoats.
I have looked at a number of publications but as yet cannot say what months greatcoats were allowed to be worn.
Any info would be welcome.

I have completed as far as I can, my research on Greatcoats and discovered that they were worn from part of October to part of May.

October and May are the crossover months when the two types of uniform worn for commissioning could both be worn.

HI,Because of the post on Uboat ID concerning the commission of U 425-The commander was not wearing a greatcoat in April, I had to re-check all my
previous findings. Of the 70 commissioning photos I looked at only 2 were outside the range of the months above.
Of these U 425, no greatcoat was worn but gloves were. The other was U 73 from September where the commander wore gloves and no greatcoat but
the guests present did. So watch out for the wearing of gloves and if you see a commissioning crew and guests wearing greatcoats then you are in the majority of cases looking at a period from October to the end of May. If no greatcoats are worn then you are looking at the start of May to the end of October.
