Retrieving objects from the water

#1

Post by wotan321 » 22 Sep 2014, 15:33

If the crew of a Type IX were required to retrieve floating objects in the water, how would they do that? Did U-boats have small boats aboard to use on the surface? Did they carry a pole-hook on board to fish things out of the water if needed?

Any information is appreciated.

HI This link should show you the dinghy.
All U-boats carried at least 2 boathooks. On the smaller mark 7 boats the boathooks were on the right hand side forward at the edge of the deck and to the stern they were on the left side. They were stored in a long slot slightly pround of the deck.

HI This link will show you U156 and at the base of the conning tower you can see the boathook.
The smaller boats did carry dinghies. In the book, The photographic diary of U564 they are pictured in a meeting with U203.

Regards MH.
