HI No I don't believe it is U444 I think it's a much later boat but I do think it's the arms of Kitzbuhel .The town must have chosen another.

Yes the boat with the white tower.

hi,

Okay let`s see what we have here.

Two boats from the 11th Flottilla, both boats have the ``polar bear``emblem on the CT.

The boat on left, looking at her vent patterns(small and large),
she is from the U-374 through U-377 series.
Only U-376 and U-377 was assigned to the 11th flotilla.

I thinking that the boat on left is U-376,the boat on the right...........??????.I am working on.
The aerial inlet from U-376 is a littlebit higher rather than the aerial inlet from U-377.

HI
I have in the past done a lot of work on this photo. The boat on the left can only be 371-390 series as you say. The emblem is a light coloured horse or wolf on a darker background. The arms of Hanover or Schmiedeberg-now Kowary in Poland are probable. I would got for Hanover as the captain of U376 was from that area. The right hand boat is of the 551-650 series, the emblem being a prussian type eagle holding a tricolour shield or flag in its beak.
Note that the diagonal goes from top right to bottom left-which is uncommon in heraldry.Anyway best of luck-I think it may be Benkers boat but can't be sure

Hi Ron,

This boat was built in one of Danzig`s shipyards. The set up of deck railing clearly indicates it.The shape of the forward part of this railing on the port side suggests Danziger Werft AG. Original slotted deck was replaced with broad planked deck to improve balance after converting the conning tower to `Turm IV`. And also it`s possible to notice the old magnetic compass fairing, so that boat was commisioned before IX 1943. We can also exclude those boats with already known school emblems. However the symbol visible on the conning tower is a bit untypical of 21 U-flotille.
What I`ve written above narrows our research to 2 boats (U 429 and U 1161). I`ve chosen U 1161 and I think this is the right guess.

The emblem of the boat in your picture looks like this:

hi Pikap,

I was thinking the same thing that this was a Danzig boat.
U-1161 sounds plausible,most definitely not U-429.

So conclusion,this is U-1161.
May i ask,the picture you posted is that U-1161??,is that just a part of the picture or the whole picture,
if it`s whole picture i would like to see it....please,never seen this before.

Oh,and thanks for the ID of U-376 and U-255,i wasn`t sure about U-376     .

hi Nobby,

Please don`t be confused, yes we are thinking that this particular boat is U-1161(picture you posted).
I hope everything is clear now for you.

regards,

Ron

Hi
Thanks Ron. Alles Klarr!
I could make no sense of P's small foto which confused me even more!
1161 not listed as having emblem or school number so possible a new find.
Mark thinks a coat of arms but I hope we can get a clear picture!

hi,

Again an EBAY picture.

Let me start with the boat on left.

1)She has no wind-deflector

2)She has the curved vents below the 8.8,only 4 or 5 vents are visible.

3)She has no Mast Antenna Housing(MAH) on her port side of the tower.

4)She has no air intake grills on the higher sail of the tower.

On her starboard side we can see the bow of another submarine............i think this is an Italian submarine.

This boat is from the Blohm & Voss(hamburg) or Howaldts Werke(Kiel) or Howaldts Werke(Hamburg) or Kriegsmarinewerft(Wilhelmshaven) shipyards.

The possible candidates are;U-392,U-558,U-574,U-651 and U-751,maybe more(source;Dougie Martindale).

______________________________________________________________________

The boat on the right.

Her portside vent patterns are; 3 16 1 ,she must be from the U-203 through U-212 series.
The little vents below the Turm are 484,below are 8 vents.

1)She has no wind-deflector.

2)She has no curved vents below the 8.8.

Have a look.
