Pictures of U 873 surrender
Searching for pictures of U 873 surrender. I have seen references to various albums of photos of the surrender of U 873 in Portsmouth, NH at the end of WWII. Does anyone have one of these albums or any pictures related to U 873? Thanks.

Reason: Correct is U 873 - not "U-873 "

And does anyone have any images of the captain (Steinhoff) and crew? I'd love to find some that are high resolution or original prints, not just smaller images from other websites?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Hi katoc....These pics may be of interest to you....
POW ID Card of Kapitänleutnant Fritz Steinhoff. First hand witnesses state that he was tortured during interrogation ( unnecessarily at that stage after the war was over) and the face you see here was swollen and bleeding.
Kapitänleutnant Steinhoff on the main deck, in the middle, carrying the boat's guest book under his arm. A copy of this pic was given to each crew member.

Hello,
here are some more pictures of U 873:
The surrender of U 805 and U 858 was well documented on film and on photographs.
On U 873, you hardly find any photos, not to speek of film footage. It would be interesting to find out if there is more material to find on that particular boat, e.g. in the archives of the Portsmouth Naval Yard where the surrendered German U-Boats where examined after the end of the war.
Kind regards, Kurfürst

Re: Pictures of U 873 surrender
Dear Kurfurst,
Re your message of 15 Mar and your reference to PNY, there is quite a lot of information about U 873 in the NARA files in RG 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships).
Also, though there may well be information and pictures in the PNY archives, I suspect that it is almost too late to find it.
The Archive is hard to access, there is no listing of the contents, and it is generally unloved. So unless someone does something to galvanise the US Navy's interest, I fear that it will be lost - which would be a great pity, not only in relation to the US Navy's U-Boats, but also all the other US submarine history that is hidden in its boxes and files.
However, to make something happens would need time, effort, enthusiasm and money, as well as an influential charismatic American leader - any takers?
Regrettably I live 3000 miles to the east of PNY and am not an American - sorry.
Yours aye,
Derek.

Re: Pictures of U 873 surrender
Dear All,
Further to my earlier message, I forgot to mention that the website of the University of New Hampshire Library, Durham, NH has a "Guide to Portsmouth Navy Shipyard Papers 1739-1985".
This includes a huge list of photographs, including some pictures of the U-Boats which surrendered, though in a quick scan I did not notice any of U 873.
This might therefore be worth a review by "Katoc" who, I see, lives in New England.
I hope this helps.

Derek.

Re: Pictures of U 873 surrender
Thank you all very much for posting all this information. Kurfürst, it looks like you have some great images!
I'm a writer working on a book about the jail where the crew of U 873 ended up. I've been trying to find high resolution images like these for some time but with mixed results. If any of you have originals that you'd be willing to consider scanning and having included in this book, could you please let me know? I'm only looking for one or two and would be happy to provide credit in the book. Owners of the web sites mentioned have ben very helpful, but unfortunately it seems their images are not high enough resolution for print publication.
Thank you.
Katoc

I have an original press headshot w/ newspaper clipping of Steinhoff I can scan for you. How is the book coming? I'd be very interested to read it!
