Post by Marcus » 17 Aug 2009, 19:27

The idea of this sticky is to collect recommendations on good books dealing with Poland during the 1919-1945 period.

Please post the title, author and a short (or long) explanation as to why you feel that particular title deserves to be included.

For a single volume original English (i.e. no translation) account of the 1939 campaign, is Poland Betrayed by Williamson recommended? the paperback just came out on paperback but have not been able to find either the hardcover or softcover in bookstores to see if its a good account. Reviews have been positive, but wanted to get a general consensus on the book.

Thanks.

"Poland Betrayed" has also been published in Polish ("Zdradzona Polska").

I haven't yet read it but I've checked several Polish reviews and they are positive too.

Next time I visit EMPiK I'll check if it's there and maybe I'll be able to tell you something about it.

"The Nazi-Soviet Invasions of 1939" suggests that the book says something more than just one or two sentences about the Soviet Invasion, which has been an almost untouched subject in English literature. I only recall Jan T. Gross writing something more about the Soviet Invasion in his "Revolution from Abroad" (the first chapter is about the "conquest" itself), but he didn't concentrate on combat operations as such - only on Soviet war crimes, etc.

This is an anecdotal rather than a scholarly account which relies heavily on personal accounts of details rather than giving an accurate military account of the wider picture. In other words a journalist's rather than a historian's account. And a very reasonable effort for what it is. However in those parts I know reasonably well (eg Westerplatte) the author is frequently factually incorrect in the detail. From the bibliography I can only surmise that the author was handicapped by being a non-Polish speaker, which clearly would have cut him off from the majority of the material available on the subject.

For a (slightly) more detailed account in English you could try: Zaloga S, Madej V. The Polish campaign 1939. New York: Hippocrene Books, 1985. This book concentrates on the history, doctrine, organisation and equipment of the Polish Army of 1939 with the campaign itself being somewhat of a postscript. However when I applied the 'Westerplatte test', alas I found the text riddled with inaccuracies, more so than the Williamson text in fact.

For me the essential text (and my go-to source when first looking into any new aspect of the campaign) remains, despite its age: Polskie Sily Zbrojne w Drugiej Wojnie Swiatowej. Tom 1, Kampania Wrzesniowa 1939. (Polish Armed Forces in the Second World War. Volume 1, September Campaign, 1939). London: Instytut Historyczny im. gen. Sikorskiego, 1951. Compiled by the Historical Commission of the Polish General Staff, this is a detailed and almost fully referenced account of the military action, day by day.

Agree, still very useful....Polskie Sily Zbrojne w Drugiej Wojnie Swiatowej. Tom 1, Kampania Wrzesniowa 1939. (Polish Armed Forces in the Second World War. Volume 1, September Campaign, 1939). London: Instytut Historyczny im. gen. Sikorskiego, 1951.

Alina Skibińska, "Guide to the Sources on the Holocaust in Occupied Poland":

http://jri-poland.org/help/Sources-on-t ... Poland.pdf
There are words which carry the presage of defeat. Defence is such a word. What is the result of an even victorious defence? The next attempt of imposing it to that weaker, defender. The attacker, despite temporary setback, feels the master of situation.

White Eagle, Red Star by Norman Davies, covers the Russo- Polish war. I liked the book, but I don't know if it's accurate.

This one is about Oflag VII A Murnau, covering both the German and the Polish side. It includes a chapter on the events of liberation, including the death of SS Generalmajor Ernst Otto Fick on 29 April 1945. It has 400 pages and lots of images, many of which are unknown.
