Here is another photo of a Polish soldier. Its not a portrait, but the man in the center is interesting. He is 19 year old Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II.

Formal portraits or candid shots; parade uniforms or combat fatigues..

Thanks for your help!
Hello Sylvie,

I realize that your original request for photos of late 30’s Polish uniforms for a “story” you were writing dates back to the summer of 2002, so hopefully the following pics will still be of interest. There are two wz. 1935 officer’s ‘rogatywka’ caps in my collection (the wz. 1935 cap was the standard issue up to the outbreak of the war), as well as a few photographs. The photo of Marshall Rydz-Smigly shows the general’s uniform in all it’s splendor. The Pole’s really had a great looking uniform –especially when decked out in the military regalia! I believe this photograph was taken just before the outbreak of war – perhaps as late as August 1939. Also included are some pics of a friends wz. 1936 uniforms – also the standard issue until the war. I am presently restoring a wz. 1936 officer’s uniform – so it is not quite ready to display.

Have you written your article, and if so I would very much appreciate to read a copy.

Best regards,

Antoni

Hi Antoni! Thank you for posting those wonderful photos. The period pictures are great, and the color images from your collection are a real treat to see! Vintage Polish uniforms seem to be quite rare, and it is good to see them preserved.

In your post, you asked about the "story" I mentioned in my original message. This is actually a novel I have been working on (part time) for a few years now. At present, it is still in process, but I am hoping to devote more time to it - and to finish it - soon.

Thanks again for posting the pictures. :)

If anyone has any additional photos to share, please post them. This can be our own database of Polish uniforms here on the forum.

Hear! Hear! – Let’s keep this thread alive! (although shouldn’t this topic be located in the ‘Equipment of the Allies…’ section?). I also welcome and encourage any additional contributions of period photographs, uniform details and accessories. Information on the topic of Polish pre-WWII uniforms is about as rare as the uniforms themselves!

The following scans are from Polski Mundur Wojskowy – roughly translated “The Polish Military Uniform” (by Zdislaw Zygulski & Henryk Wielecki). This is one of the best (and one of the very few) books devoted to Polish military uniforms. In order to stay true to the topic of this thread - all of the pics are of late 30’s uniforms – those that were ‘current issue’ up to the September Campaign and start of the war. I hope you enjoy them.

(Sylvie – re. the nature of your book – is it a fictional novel? I am curious how the topic of Polish military uniforms fits in)

Best regards,

Antoni
