French nationals abroad

#1

Post by Andy H » 26 Sep 2007, 11:43

I was reading the following on the Naval History Net:-
Caribbean - French light cruiser JEANNE D’ARC and submarine SURCOUF, escorting a merchant ship, arrived at Barranquilla, Colombia, to embark French citizens for transport home for military service
What was the total number of French citizens that returned home to fight? and also why Colombia in this instance-Was there a large French presence in Colombia etc

Regards

hello

searching something in the forum I come across this old thread

Colombia?
not really a big french colony, around 500 French citizens in the years 30

France was more a country of immigration than emigration
about the ~half-million French citizens abroad in the years 1930' they were mainly concentrated
-in (mostly Western) Europe (c.41.5%)
-United States (c.23,5%) (North America 27,7%)
-Latin América (c.22%)
-rest of World (8,8%)

the strongest french immigration/emigration (depending on what side you see) in Latin America was historically and traditionaly to Argentina, in lesser degree Mexico and Brazil

French citizens abroad, first 10 countries >10 000 (1931 census)

first 4 countries concentrate 60% of them

-United States 127 000

-Argentina and Belgium 80 000

-Switzerland 40 000

-Canada 21 000
-Spain 20 000
-Great Britain 16 000 (23 000 with Channel Islands)
-Egypt 18 000
-Brazil 14 000
-Germany 13 000 (20 000 with Sarre but evacuated in 1935)
