French navy at Dunkirk

Postby Warspite1 on 25 Jan 2011 16:18

I am looking for information re the role of the French navy during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

For example, were the French ships under the command of the British for Dynamo or was Abrial able to act independently?

Were French ships only instructed to evacuate French troops? Or were troops taken aboard any vessel in accordance with whatever plans were put in place by the naval shore parties?

Any assistance in pointing me in the right direction of some (English text) books on this subject would be appreciated.

Dear W1,
Dunkirk, the patriotic myth, will give you information of what was going on. The French were initially only evacuating Britsh Troops. Later Churchill made a point to evacuate equal numbers of French Troops. Abrial was under the "defense committee" which was part of the 1940 problem; neither nations troops were under a clear command so some inefficient leadership leading to defeat happened. The book talks about air defence of the salient; British AA
guns were being destroyed when the Luftwaffe was pounding the troops. One officer, disobeyed and got his battery down to the docks enabling a more effective defense.
Strike Swiftly,
TH-M2
