Hello,

has anyone found any photos of French troops 1939-40 ? perhaps pre war military exercises .

All i seem to find are photos of French POW's marching.

Hi Ranjit.

It seems that French photos from 1939-45 are relatively rare. Most are either official government or press photos. Someone told me the reason for this is that French soldiers were not allowed to carry cameras. There are some pre-war photos of the French Army in the US National Archives, and I assume the French and German archives have photos too.

Marc

Hello,
If you see so many French POW's it is mainly because the campaign of France is still covered by a kind of "pro-german biais" and because 80% of the pictures come from the nazi German propaganda or private pictures from german soldiers

of course in the French reviews, books, forums etc, there are photos coming from the relatives, perhaps not all about may and june 1940 but from september 1939 to june 1940 you can find,
there is a book published in 2010 based on french pictures and not from the german propaganda

Hi Loïc,

It is unfortunate, but many excellent French-language books like the one you posted are not easily available outside of France or Europe.

Marc

Why is it that captured soldiers always look shabby?

Here are a few from the 7 March 1940 and 6 June 1940 editions of Match magazine. Sorry the scans aren't clearer, but I thought the content was interesting.

Uniform- copy.jpg
I wonder if anyone can identify this uniform? As far as I can see this soldier was captured at Dunkirk, all ideas very gratefully received

Hello

only a vareuse toutes armes modèle 1938 I think,
the button is for the amovible piece of cloth added to hide the colored collar patch with the unit number to identify the various corps and branches of the Army

Soldiers of the 67e régiment d'infanterie. Not sure of the date on this. My French is a little rusty but I think the sign says something like "Rememberance of our service, the 67th Inf. Reg. .....in Soissons".
