Help to ID a shell

#1

Post by arjones » 03 Jan 2014, 19:59

Hello

I am trying to identify this shell that is in my land I have just bought at St Fromond in Normandy. It appears to be a 16" shell and the first impression is that it would be from something like HMS Rodney that was on bombard duty post invasion. However the angle it is oriented at indicates it emanated from the German lines perhaps fired from the direction to the west of Saint Lo. I was wondering if perhaps it was from reused ordnance brought over from the Eastern front?

Does anyone have any ideas?
Bomb disposal are arriving in a few days and I fear it may be destroyed and lost!

There appears to be no scoring on the rifling band, so it may be an unfired shell. Also the base seems damaged, perhaps from bulldozing or demolition.

Really I don't know, ask EOD when they clear it , what it was/is. I would not mess with it or want to keep it. They will in all likely-hood dispose of it.

And hopefully you don't have a whole buried ammo dump/disposal area there,

Hi Christopher

Thankfully it turned out to be a dud.
