French air units and their equivalents?

#1

If I have understood correctly the structure of French air units, it went like this:

Escadre = Wing(US) = german Geschwader
Groupe = Wing(British)/Group(US) = german gruppe
escadrille = squadron = german Staffel

How important was "Escadre" as a unit? - for what I have read is that French "Groupes" were pretty autonomous and much more independent of Escadres than German Gruppes of Geschwaders.
