Re: I need help to Id US truck
Hi Sturm:
I am no expert on the subject, and you may already know this, but.............
In order to save very valuable shipping space, it was a common practice during WWII (and even today) to ship things like autos and trucks in various states of "Knocked Down". "PKD", partially knocked down, "SKD", semi knocked down and "CKD", completely knocked down.
I am not absolutely sure if your photo shows a CKD or a PKD assembly line as we only see one part of the operation.
In this case, we can see that the wheels/tyres were shipped in one crate, the axle assemblies in another and the line is a mating of the wheels/tyres to the driven axles. I do not know whether these axles were for the front or the rear of the vehicle, but you can see a 3/4 ton Dodge in the background, so they could be either one.
In any case, I have seen a series of photos of this operation but I did not save the series and I will look again but I must say it was very impressive. Crates of engines, wheels/tyres, cabins, bodies, fender/mudguards and all the other bits that make up a complete vehicle. This took place in North Africa, Iran, England and I am sure other locations up to 1944 when I suppose enough shipping was available or the theatres had enough vehicles. I believe it may have also taken place in Australia but I have no evidence. As well, the number of vehicles going to the Pacific theatre was rather less than the number which were sent to Europe/Africa/Russia.
The photos I saw showed a rather primitive assembly line rather like the one in your photo, lots of labour using ordinary hand tools and so on. Very, very labour intensive to be sure.
I hope this helps.
Bill

Hi all,
I am not sure about these two M4 tractors. Is this a wartime-era image or postwar? US vehicles or French ??

Re: I need help to Id US truck
Most probably French, I see our tricolour flag on the bumper and the registration plate is consistent with our own
Probably psotwar as they are too shiny for operational vehicles - plus I am not sure we got any before the end of the war.
