I would guess it is a mobile observation tower???
I surely wouldn``t be the sitting duck up there :D

if you look at the picture, is a gun limber, the piece where the horses leatherware attaches to it is clearly vissible in middle of the pole, right at the knees of the soldier holding the rangefinder......

in the desert, even a couple meters height are used to better advantage

i've seen something like that before and it was described as a signalling post. The guy below is reading the messages, whilst the one above using the two block devices sends messages, some type of coloured morse I believe

I know its only small but isnt the box in front of the man on the pole a signalling device?

Looks issue to me, the men are dressed in the style of the 1900 South African war (British mounted arty?)
