Can anyone shed any light on the attached photo? It comes from the ADRIA ILLUSTRIERTE, No. 16, 1945 (April 21). The caption says it shows "US Flyer-Colonel Tomhave", who was shot down over Italy and taken prisoner. While being taken on a Red Cross train, he was killed when a US aircraft strafed it.

Did something like this befall any captured US pilots during this stage of the war?

A Italian cargo ship loaded with US & British prisoners was bombed while departing Tunisia for Italy in 1943. The crew ran the ship aground & abandoned it & the PoW including wounded.
