I was hoping somebody may be able to assist me here who knows more about the movements of the US 1st Infantry Division during 7-12 May 1945.

I know the 1st Infantry Division, strengthened with part of the 9th Armored Division fought their way towards the Czechoslovakian town of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) in early May 1945. Karlovy Vary was still part of the Sudetenland at the time. The town surrendered to the 9th Armored Division via telephone conversation on 7 May 1945.

To what extent was the 1st involved in securing the area around Carlsbad? Were they responsible for guarding any of the ad-hoc POW camps that were set up? Is it possible that units of the 1st guarded prisoners in nearby Meierhöfen?

My grandfather surrendered to the Americans on 7 May 1945 and ended up in an 'Ami' POW camp at Meierhöfen

Staunton has two sentences on this. The first refers to attacking towards Karlsbad, the second places the 18th Regiment as seizing Sangerberg and Mnichov 6th May, the 16th Regiment as seizing Kynsperk 6th May, and the 26th Regiment as in Schoenbach on 7 May.

Hope that helps.
