General officers not found in Official US Army Registers

Hi,

I am researching the general officers of the USAAF during WW2 and all seem to appear in the Official US Army Registers, 1940-1946, except for the following:

Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle
Maj. Gen. Edward P. Curtis
Maj. Gen. Cyrus R. Smith
Brig. Gen. John S. Allard
Brig. Gen. Maurice M. Beach
Brig. Gen. Bartlett Beaman
Brig. Gen. Victor E. Bertrandis
Brig. Gen. Frederick W. Castle
Brig. Gen. Frederick T. Davison
Brig. Gen. William H. Eaton
Brig. Gen. Lawrence G. Fritz
Brig. Gen. Thomas O. Hardin
Brig. Gen. Harold R. Harris
Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Manning
Brig. Gen. Elliott Roosevelt

They do appear, however, in "The Biographical Dictionary of World War II Generals and Flag Officers" by R. Manning Ancell and Christine Miller, as well as other secondary sources, but not in the Army Registers. In the case of Doolittle, I am assuming he was considered part of the Reserves and thus wouldn't be listed, but for the others, I have no idea.

Would anyone know why these names would not be listed in the Registers? Where they considered unofficial, temporary promotions due to status, etc? I have no idea.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

The reason is that the Army Register only list regular army officers (permanent officers) and not those called to active duty from either the reserves, National Guard or directly from civilian life. So their ranks where temporary (in Army of the United States) and not permanent in US Army.
Kind Regards

Hi Steen!

Great thanks. I had a feeling it was something like that...I guess I just needed someone else with more knowledge about the subject to verify it for me.
