Re: Marmon Herrington Armoured cars
I read that 175 of these were shipped to Malaya, but I can only name a few units that used them.
The 3rd Indian Cavalry had at least 16
The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders had 4
There were two locally raised armoured car squadrons which had Lanchesters, but may have had Marmons, namely Straits Settlements Volunteer Force Armoured Car Sqn, and
Federated Malay States Volunteer Force Armoured Car Sqn.
Possibly many were shipped on, but to were and whom?

When were they supposed to have been shipped Steve?
And all 175 at the same time?

Hi David
Leland Ness in Jane's WW2 tanks and fighting vehicles states that, besides deliveries to India and the Dutch Indies, no less than 175 Marmon-Herringtons were delivered to Malaya in the second part of 1941!

Re: Marmon Herrington Armoured cars
Marmon-Herrington Mk II: This had 4 wheel drive with a longer wheelbase.4 There were twin doors in the rear that made for easy access.4 Early models were riveted with the rest welded.
Other variants were artillery OP, ambulance, command car, fitters vehicle, and RAF contact car with AA Lewis gun in turret and radio antennae.
Middle East (ME): Had Boys ATR.4 Two Bren MGs, one coaxial in the turret and one anti aircraft.4
Mobile Field Force (MFF): There were two Vickers MGs, one in the turret and the other in a ball mount on the near side.4

This would suggest that all Marmon Herrington Armoured Cars, were not, in the true sense. Perhaps many of the vehicles sent to Malaya were variants, or were unarmed and used in the variant role. Returning back to the picture of newly arrived Marmons, many can be seen with a ball mount fitted at the front, but no gun.

Re: Marmon Herrington Armoured cars
The 49 SA Recce Cars that were delivered to the NEI arrived without armaments as well:

I have seen some reports of more SA Recce Cars on Java, possibly delivered in early 1942 when delivery to Malaya was no longer possible. Some of these cars possibly were given to British troops to form ad hoc armoured car units. This also happened to a shipment of Humber armorued cars. RAF armoured car units for airfield defence have also been sighted on Java in 1942, though little is known.
Any info appreciated.
Kind regards,
Nuyt

Re: Marmon Herrington Armoured cars
Interestingly, unarmed vehicles survived as well, up to the Indonesian Independence War in the late 40s.
Some vehicles can be seen in this thread:

Re: Marmon Herrington Armoured cars
Regarding the numbers of Marmons used in Malaya, I wonder if the source used by Leland Ness in Jane's WW2 tanks and fighting vehicles might have confused them with the Indian Pattern Armoured Car which used the same chassis.
