Are you talking about the 1st Btn the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regt?

If you are, the 1st started the war in Palestine, before moving to Cyprus in June 1940. Eventually in 1942 it moved back to Egypt where it converted to a Motorised role, and eventually captured at Tobruk later in the year

Andy.

No I'm not, as far as I know, these are two seperate units.
Unless of course there was a name change somewhen.

Hi David

Every search combo I come up with leads me to the Sherwoods, I haven't come across them whilst looking through books & papers.

Do you have a contextual reference point, some definative basis as to where they where and within what organisation/capacity they worked within?

Alexandria 10th June 1940. Possibly as part of one of the Fortress Brigades?

Well Niehorster has a 1 NF listed as a MG Btn within the 18th/Cairo Bde Area structure for 03/09/39, but thats an abbreviation for The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers

http://niehorster.orbat.com/017_britain ... egypt.html

Maybe your 1st NF and his, are one and the same?

It could be. But I've only ever seen the Northumberland Fusiliers abbreviated that way.

The plot thickens!

David

I don't think such regiment as the Royal Notts Foresters, certainly with those combinations of words ever existed.

Even saying it, the Royal Nottinghamshire Forresters doesn't sound right.

Which leads me to believe that they either were the Sherwoods. Or it was some kind of typo for Northumberland Fusiliers.
