6th South African A/C Regiment
6th South African A/C Regiment
Has anyone got a date of arrival for the 6th S.A A/C Reg in N. Africa?
I have a provisional of 12th June 1941.

7th SA was not an Armoured Car Regiment, it was a Recconnaissance Regiment, although it had an immense number of Marmon-Herringtons, 215 of them at the time of CRUSADER. It was attached to 2 SA Division. 3 SA Recconnaissance Regiment (formed from 1, 2, and 3 Armoured car Companies and elements of 1 and 2 M/C Companies) was similar and had 245 Marmon-Herringtons for Crusader. It was redesignated as an Armoured Car Regiment in July 1942, although the change was pretty much ignored by the regiment.David W wrote:Andy.
I think that it was independent. At least in the beginning, as I have the 7th S.A A/C Reg with the 2nd S.A Inf Div.
The earliest I find 6 SA Armoured Car Regiment appearing in records I have of Eighth Army is 20 September 1941, although the were probably there much earlier.
Good question. Nominally each of the three companies had 38 armored cars, so 114. Where the other 100 were I have no clue? But the numbers are repeated over and over again in different reports of different days, so look to be accurate.David W wrote:How were thay orgainsed? That sounds like about 12 Squadrons!7th SA was not an Armoured Car Regiment, it was a Recconnaissance Regiment, although it had an immense number of Marmon-Herringtons, 215 of them at the time of CRUSADER.
