79th Anti tank Regiment R.A
79th Anti tank Regiment R.A
Did the 79th, when they arrived in North Africa in June 1942 have their 6 Pdrs? Or were they still on 2 Pdrs, or did they have no guns at all, until later?
Re: 79th Anti tank Regiment R.A
Does anyone know?
Re: 79th Anti tank Regiment R.A
My grandfather Edwin Parsons was a B.S.M. with this regiment and served in North Africa where he was wounded in 1942, My research has always suggested this regiment never served in Africa, even though i knew he had served there..,I was very pleased to find this web site and your question which i am unable to answer... I would love to hear from you on this subject.

Barry.
As far as I can tell, the Regiment were in North Africa from June 1942 to September 1942. If that helps.....

Re: 79th Anti tank Regiment R.A
I have just started helping my son-in-laws father find out something about his late Uncle who was killed in El Alamein on 17th July 1942. He was a member of the 79th Anti-tank Regiment RA. Family story was that he was killed in a "Tank" that was shot at by another tank. Were the REgiment equipped with towed or tracked equipments? Any help greatly appreciated.

From my understanding the 79th was a towed unit, though there are far more knowledgeable persons than I on this matter, who may well be able to tell you differently.
Unless something unusual had happened, then I suspect the Uncle wouldn't have been in a 'Tank' but in one of the vehicles used to tow the gun or another vehicle used by the unit!
Your son-in-law's Uncle was killed during the so called First Battle of El Alamein ( July 1st- 27th July), and not the much more 'famous' Second Battle which were all the more familiar with.
