Hi Sturm

I agree with the identification of the gun. It looks like a demonstration shoot. Looking at the crew's uniforms, they are "parade" standard. The 3.7 inch Mountain Gun was used by the early airborne batteries, until there were enough US 75mm Pack Howitzers to replace it.

This is not a british but an american 6 inch naval gun. Most likely a 6 inch MK 10 on a a MK 23 MOUNT.The principle identification point is the "Y" shaped sight bracket on top of the gun.

Hi ROLAND1369,

Are you sure Mk.10 gun on Mk.23 mount ??
I think the mount is the Mk.10 model and the gun itself would be a Mk.6 or Mk.8 model, no ??

In answer to your question I stated "probibly" as without examining the gun markings or weapon records it is impossible to be sure, however I am relativly sure on the Mark X designation for the gun and the mount is most likely a mark 22 or 23, probibly the later. I base this on the fact that the official documentation of simular 6 inch Naval guns in Alaska and Point Lobos in San Francisco show official documents with Mk X guns on mark 23 and 22 mounts. In addition the 1945 US Navy "OP 1112 GUN MOUNT AND TURRET CATALOG" shows only MK 10 guns of this caliber still in service. That mark VI guns on Mark X carriages were still around is confirmed as a battery of two guns was present at Fort Macon, North carolina in wWWII. I based the Mark 23 Carriage on the series of unused bolts and nuts on the front of the lower carriage of the gun in the picture. These were for the mounting of a circular shield when thsese were used as casemate mountings while still on shipboard. One of the Mark 23 mounts in Alaska is shown with the shield still in place. Only an educated guess
as to the mount based on a simular confirmed mount. The only way to confirm it is to find official documentation. i could easily be wrong but the gun mount combination did exist and was used during WW II.

One more thing I wish to emphasise. My nomenclature on this is merely an educated guess. I would rate it as a 60% probibility. I am not saying that I could not easily be wrong, it would be far from the first time. From the photo the only sure thing is that it is a Us Navy 6 Inch 50 former deck gun, not British.

Thank you, again, ROLAND1369

I am not expert in the matter....

I often use this webpage as a reference but ... appears unreliable....

Neither am I. My primary field is the US Coast Artillery. US Naval guns and mounts, with the exception of Major Caliber Turrets, are as big a minefield as French Railway Gun Identification. For instance the 5 inch 38 caliber single mounts run up to Mark 30 with 83 sub varients.

Looking at the photo I don't think it is a 6 inch coast gun by the shape of the shield, the 6 inch normally had a half circular one. I am also finding it hard to locate a photo of 4.7 ich gun with the same design of shield. The hand wheels for the elevating and traversing gears do not seem to match the 6 inch or the 4.7 inch. Why is that chap standing in front of the breach?

Could the two 4.7 inch guns at Hong Kong be some of the ones that the Japanese supplied to the British durring the 14-18 war?
